About this activity

Some cities grew on their own, century by century. Others were thought through line by line before they existed at all. Brasília is the second kind. On this morning along the Eixo Monumental you discover the capital that Lúcio Costa drew and Oscar Niemeyer raised in the middle of the Cerrado, beside a local guide who knows how to read what every curve, every open span and every reflecting pool is saying.

The route combines interiors and exteriors. You step inside the Museu Nacional da República, the Catedral Metropolitana, where the stained glass floods the nave with light and colour, and the Panteão da Pátria, the Espaço Lúcio Costa and the Museu Histórico de Brasília, all on the Praça dos Três Poderes. Along the way there are stops to take in the reflecting pool at the Palácio Itamaraty, the water cascades of the Palácio da Justiça, the silhouette of the Congresso Nacional from the lawn and the lines of the Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro. It is architecture, but it is also political history, public art and symbol.

Brasília has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, one of the very few twentieth century urban ensembles to hold that distinction. Walking through it unhurried, with someone who knows it, means understanding an entire idea of a country translated into concrete, glass and empty space: the monumental scale, the order of the sectors, the intention behind every axis.

At the stop beside the Catedral there is time for the craft market held in front of the monument, where you buy directly from the people who make the work. Discover Brasil works with local ground operators and with guides from the city itself, because the best way to experience a territory is to hear it told by the people who live in it.
